Title

Try to go over (t)here

Introduction

In landscapes where there should be no people, there are people. In places where a person with common sense would avoid—such as beautiful iron towers with geometric patterns of protruding piles and truss structures from a bottomless water surface—author Mikito Tanaka imagines, 'What if there were someone there...?'

Tanaka’s series 'Try to go over (t)here,' which he has been working on since 2003, is a collection of works where he himself becomes the subject, effectively 'going there.' He uses a MAMIYA RB6×7 camera mounted on a tripod to determine the composition and exposure, and then places himself in the scene. During the shooting process, he sometimes falls into the water multiple times, loses his glasses, or occasionally has a trusted friend press the shutter for him.

These works depict a world that is 'somewhere' like a painting, challenging preconceived notions of impossibility. It’s a beautiful world whether one is present or not. Fascinated by such worlds, Tanaka seems to be constantly searching for the next location.
